Spartans Stomp Out Flames in NCAA Opener
FLORENCE, Ala. - The University of Tampa Spartans squared off against the Lee University Flames in the opening round of the NCAA South Regional Friday night and emerged victorious by a score of 1-0.
The first half of play was a dominated by Tampa, despite Lee holding a majority of the possession. UT fired off just three shots to LU's six and placed two on net. The Spartans made the most of their opportunities, by taking an early lead as Ali Robinson found the back of the net after getting her head on a Miranda Gonzalez cross at the 14-minute mark, and would take their 1-0 lead into the half.
Second half action was a had fought defensive battle, with both sides grinding out the final 45 minutes as the Spartans looked to extend their lead to two goals, and the Flames trying to score an equalizer to keep their season alive. Neither side was able to tally another score and the contest ended 1-0. Contributing big to UT's efforts in the second half was goalkeeper Caroline Frykgard who made several great saves late in the match. Frykgard and the Tampa defense made several great plays late in the match to deny any comeback efforts by LU.
Following the victory, Tampa advances to 12-4-5 and extends their quest for a national championship. UT will return to action on Sunday as they face No. 2 North Alabama and is slated for a 3 p.m. start. Live stats and a broadcast will be available for fans to follow at home.
