Cici Gonzalez Named D2CCA All-American
RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. - University of Tampa senior women's soccer player Cici Gonzalez was among those named to the D2CCA All-American team.
Gonzalez, a senior midfielder from Lutz, Fla., became a three-time All-American. She led Tampa in scoring in 2015, scoring 13 goals. Gonzalez also added two assists and six game-winning goals. She finished her Spartan career with 58 goals and 25 assists.
Grand Valley State junior midfielder Marti Corby, fresh off of winning a third national championship, claimed the Ron Lenz National Player of the Year to headline the 2015 Division II Conference Commissioners Association Women's Soccer All-America Team.
Corby, joined 12 other student-athletes on an All-America first team that also featured North Alabama forward Chloe Richards, the 2014 Ron Lenz Player of the Year. Defender Katy Woolley gave Grand Valley State two representatives on the First Team. Columbus State, runner up to Grand Valley State, placed two on the First Team in forward Nicole Corcione and defender Shelby Rolling.
The first-team also featured a pair from Bridgeport - senior forward Jess Laszlo and junior defender Julia Weidenmark; two freshmen - Harding's Bethany Sutherland and KatrinaGiantsopoulos from Davis & Elkins College; midfielders Mani Brueckner from Gannon and Bella Mitrevski from Roberts Wesleyan, Central Missouri defender Abby Rhodes and West Virginia Wesleyan goalkeeper Hillary DeWitt.
Corby, a junior from Ada, Michigan, became the second Laker to earn the National Player of the Year award, joining Katy Tafler, who earned the distinction in 2006 and 2007. Corby led the nation with 17 assists and nine game-winning goals -including the deciding goal in the national championship game. Her 25 goals ranked third in Division II and she rankedsecond in the nation with 67 points.
The Ron Lenz National Player of the Year award was named for long-time South Dakota State sports information director Ron Lenz in 2008. Lenz was instrumental in the foundation of the NCAA Division II All-America program, which honors outstanding student-athletes across eight NCAA Division II sports.
Sports information directors from NCAA Division II schools and conferences selected the three Daktronics All-America teams. The process begins at the regional level with all first-team all-region picks advancing to the national ballot. A total of 53 student-athletes representing 29 different institutions filled out the three teams and the honorable mention squad.
The Division II Conference Commissioners Association encourages and promotes Division II athletics and high standards of sportsmanship as important elements of higher education. The CCA is a key communications link among the conferences as they discuss views, policies and regulations that impact Division II intercollegiate athletics and works closely with the NCAA as a communications channel to NCAA Division II member colleges and universities.
