Spartans Drop Season Opener
TAMPA, Fla. - The University of Tampa tennis team suffered a 6-3 loss to Embry-Riddle University in its 2009 season opener. The Spartans faced a tough test as the Eagles are the No. 11 team in NAIA.
In doubles play, the team of Emily Kennedy and Claire Runge claimed an 8-5 victory for the Spartans from the number three spot.
Tampa also took a pair of singles matches, with victories coming from Kourtney Stark and Victoria Bell at the number four and five spots. After winning a first set tiebreak, Stark cruised in the second frame to a 6-0 victory. Bell registered an easy win as the freshman won 6-0, 6-1.
The Spartans return to action on Tuesday against another tough foe in SSC rival and No. 17 Florida Southern College. The match is scheduled for 3 p.m., in Tampa.
