No. 23 Tampa Eases Past MSU-Moorehead
TAMPA, Fla. - The No. 23 University of Tampa (7-6) tennis team returned following a week-long break and downed Minnesota State University-Moorehead (4-6) by a 9-0 score at the Naimoli & Young Family Tennis Complex.
The dominance began in doubles, where the Spartans lost just two games. The number-one team of Lauren Hewett and Meg Wladimirski led the way with a perfect 8-0 showing. The number-two team of Thashia Garcia and Alexandra Bologno and the three-team of Kelsey Matthews and Katherine Pyne each won 8-1.
In singles, Wladimirski took a straight-set win of 6-3, 6-4 at the number-one position. Hewett claimed a 6-1 first set victory before her opponent retired. Garcia and Matthews, playing the three and four positions, each blanked their opponents 6-0, 6-0. This marked the first singles action of the season for Garcia.
The final two singles matches also resulted in easy Tampa wins as Pyne and Jenelle Morgan each won by scores of 6-0, 6-2.
The Spartans return to action on Thursday as they host No. 44 Indiana University, Pa., at 3 p.m. IUP represents the 10th nationally-ranked opponent on the UT schedule this season.
