WINTER PARK, Fla. - The No. 23 University of Tampa tennis team fell by a 5-1 score to No. 5 Lynn University in the quarterfinals of the 2014 Sunshine State Conference Championships, which was hosted by Rollins College.
The Spartans conclude the 2014 season with an 11-8 overall record, marking the second straight winning season as UT also reached double-figure victory totals for the second consecutive year. Lynn improves to 20-2 on the year as it advances in the tourney.
The lone Spartan victory came at number three singles as senior Lauren Hewett defeated No. 36 Andrea Berkova. UT also had a closely fought number three doubles contest as the tandem of Kelsey Matthews and Katherine Pyne were defeated 9-7.
UT's 2014 lineup featured arguably the best doubles duo in school history as Hewett and Meg Wladimirski were the first pair to earn a national ranking as the winningest number-one duo in program history. Additionally, Hewett departs with 40 career doubles wins, placing her second all-time on the school chart. Wladimirski is third with 37.
In singles, Hewett, Wladimirski and Thashia Garcia each depart in the program's top-10 for wins with 32, 29 and 25 respectively.
