Spartan Women Claim Team Win at Ryan McCall Meet
TAMPA, Fla. - The University of Tampa men's and women's track teams hosted the annual Ryan McCall Meet at Pepin Stadium, with the Spartan women finishing first and the men third.
The Spartan women finished with a total of 100 points, topping Webber International (90.5), Florida Tech (60), South Florida (24.5), Florida Southern (15) and Valdosta State (7).
In men's action, Webber International claimed the victory with 84 points. Florida Tech followed with 64 and UT tallied 47. Also competing were Florida Southern (10) and Southeastern, Fla. (8).
UT's women opened the meet with a first place finish in the 4x800 relay. The team of Jessie Luttenschlager, Sarah Waller, Iolani Scanlan and Kelly Hagan were timed at 9:51.41.
In the 400 Meter Hurdles, UT's Kelsey Burnett (1:09.15) and Marina Alfonso (1:09.27) finished third and fourth respectively.
Lindsay Smith finished second in the 100 Meter Dash, being clocked at 13.04. Also running for UT were Angelica Wagner (sixth, 13.90), Jocelyn Doina (eighth, 14.62) and Nicole Cleary (ninth, 15.30).
The women's 1,500 Meter Run featured a pair of Spartans, including Liz Anthony (fourth, 5:10.47) and Scanlan (sixth, 5:20.89). In the 400 Meter Run, the Tampa representation consisted of Haley Weaver (fourth, 1:04.06), Wagner (sixth, 1:08.80), Erin Mertz (eighth, 1:09.56) and Cleary (ninth, 1:11.56).
The Ryan McCall 800 Meter Run included a pair of Spartans in the top three as Waller was second (2:19.85) and Hagan was third (2:21.01). Scanlan also finished eighth in a time of 2:39.46.
Smith took first place in the 200 Meter Dash with a time of 27.04. Alfonso (seventh, 28.42), Wagner (eighth, 28.56), Mertz (ninth, 28.85), Doina (11th, 29.62) and Cleary (12th, 31.76) also raced for the Spartans.
In the 5,000 Meter race, Tampa had a second and third place finish from Courtney Ragan (18:18.37) and Vanessa Righeimer (18:34.56).
Tampa's women concluded the meet in the 4x100 Meter Relay, finishing second. The group of Alfonso, Kelsey Burnett, Weaver and Smith finished in 52.32.
The Spartan men kicked off their portion of the meet in the 4x800 relay, finishing second to Florida Southern. Tampa had a time of 8:04.23 from the team of Geremy DeWitt, Peter Licari, Josh Morrison and Steven Dennig.
Ryan Rogers competed in the 400 Meter Hurdles, placing seventh with a time of 1:04.69. Tyrone Clayton was fourth in the 100 Meter Dash as he registered a time of 11.10. In the 400 Meter Run, the Tampa duo of Rohan Trench (seventh, 57.02) and Rogers (eighth, 57.50) ran in the race.
The men's Ryan McCall 800 Meter Run saw Dennig lead a pair of UT runners with a time of 2:01.51. Morrison was fourth (2:02.73).
Clayton was also fourth in the 200 Meter Dash with a time of 22.36 as Trench was 22nd in a time of 25.19.
In the men's 5,000 Meter Run, Charles Toledo was fourth with a time of 15:35.71 as Licari (seventh, 15:55.27), DeWitt (15th, 16:27.81) and Mike Leone (18th, 16:35.99) also finished.
UT wrapped up the annual meet with a third place showing in the 4x400 Meter Relay. Clayton, Morrison, Trench and Dennig clocked a time of 3:39.60.
Tampa will return to action on April 20 at the Tom Jones Meet in Gainesville, Fla.
