Spartans Snap Sailfish Win Streak
TAMPA, Fla. - The No. 2 University of Tampa volleyball team defeated Palm Beach Atlantic University 3-0. The victory was led by junior Holly Reschke, who recorded 10 kills for the Spartans and sophomore Meagan Burke, who recorded 11 total blocks. The Spartan win ended a 21 match winning streak for the Sailfish.
Tampa improves to 16-2 on the season. Palm Beach Atlantic University falls to 23-3 following the 25-17, 25-16, 25-22 decision. This was the Sailfish's first loss in five tries against Sunshine State Conference opponents.
The Spartans displayed excellent defense throughout the match, finishing with 27 total team blocks. Burke's 11 total blocks tied the University of Tampa school record for blocks in a three set match. The middle blocker joins former All-American's Danielle Faggion (1997) and Tiffany Boatwright (2000) to reach the 11 block total.
The first set was won by Tampa 25-17. The Spartans had a balanced attack on offense with 15 team kills and a .519 attack percentage. Setter Kahley Patrick had 12 assists.
The Spartans continued their quick pace of play in the second set, winning 25-16. Danielle Selkridge, the most recent addition to the Spartan 1,000 kill club, led the team with four kills. Libero Jen Scholz kept the strong defensive play going with five digs.
The third set was won by a 25-22 score as Jessica Yingling connected on 4-of-7 attempts to lead the Spartans. The senior finished the day with a .412 attack percentage. Despite allowing 22 points, Tampa made things difficult for the Sailfish with 11 blocks in the set.
Tampa will be back in action Thursday night against Valdosta State University. The match is set for a 6 p.m. start at the Bob Martinez Athletics Center. Live stats as well as a live video webcast will be available through www.tampaspartans.tv.
