Tampa Takes Down Rival Florida Southern
TAMPA, Fla. - No. 7 University of Tampa volleyball travelled to Florida Southern College and brought back a victory in three set fashion. The Spartans defeated its Sunshine State Conference rival to remain perfect in SSC play.
The Spartans lead the Sunshine State Conference with an 12-0 mark, and a 23-3 overall record. The Mocs of Florida Southern fall to 17-11, 7-5 SSC.
Senior Danielle Selkridge once again led the Spartans in kills and attack percentage, finishing with 11 kills on the afternoon. Meagan Burke and Holly Reschke played keys roles in the Spartans success by adding nine kills each.
Following a 15 kill performance last night at St. Leo University, Selkridge started up right where she left off. The senior swung for a perfect 5-5, raising her already SSC-best .478 attack percentage. Jessica Yingling, Reschke and Burke all added at least three kills to put the Mocs away by a 25-20 final in the opening frame.
For the second stanza, Tampa looked to newcomer Marissa Lisenbee. The freshman recorded four kills on eight attacks, working nicely with the Spartan offense. Burke's presence was felt again in the set, adding four kills. UT finished off the frame on a 7-1 run, ending the set with a 25-13 advantage.
Stepping up for the Spartans in the third set was Reschke. The junior finished the set with four kills and two aces, the majority of which came in a UT 8-1 run in the middle of the frame that even brought the travelling Spartan faithful to its feet. Tampa withstood a strong comeback push from the Mocs to win the final set 25-22.
Yingling is a player for fans to watch over the next few games. The captain is approaching 1,000 kills in her Spartan career. With seven kills today, she now just sits 31 kills away from the impressive milestone.
The Spartans will return next weekend for a slate of Sunshine State Conference matchups. Tampa will take on Nova Southeastern University on Friday, November 9th, and Lynn University on Saturday, November 10th. Both games will be home matchups for UT, taking place at the Bob Martinez Center. Live stats as well as a live video webcast for the Nov. 9th match will be available through www.tampaspartans.tv.
