Box score
FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. - The No. 1 University
of Tampa volleyball team (14-1, 7-0 SSC) improved to 14-1 on the
season Friday night, with a 3-0 triumph (25-15, 25-14, 25-17) over
the Nova Southeastern University Sharks (8-9, 3-5 SSC).
The road win signaled the Spartans' 43rd-consecutive Sunshine
State Conference victory, a school and conference record that dates
back to 2011. In addition, the victory improved the top-ranked
Spartans' win streak to ten-straight.
The match quickly fell in favor of the Spartans, as Tampa took
the first point of the match and never looked back, earning a 25-15
first set victory.
With a 1-0 score in their favor, the Spartans built upon an
early momentum and cruised to a three-set sweep over the Sharks on
NSU's home court.
Junior outside hitter Berkley Whaley, who led all players in
the contest with 12 kills, directed the top-ranked Spartans to
victory on the evening. The All-American ended the match as the
only player with kills in double-digits and propelled her squad to
a .353 attack average.
Hot off an impressive outing against Lynn University last
Saturday, sophomore outside hitter Allee Stelogeannis again nearly
posted a double-double, swatting nine kills and recording ten digs
in the performance. Junior right side hitter Marissa Lisenbee also
registered nine kills on the evening.
In typical fashion, senior setter Kahley Patrick led the
Spartans with 37 assists in the three-set sweep, averaging over 12
assists per set. The senior currently leads the Sunshine State
Conference with over 11.6 assists per set.
Defensively, freshman libero Molly McAlvany tallied 12 digs to
lead Tampa from the back row, while Lisbenbee stood firm at the net
with two blocks. As a team, the Spartans held Nova Southeastern to
an attack percentage of just .151 on the night.
The Spartans will wrap up their weekend of travel on Saturday,
October 11 with a 4 p.m. contest at Barry University. Barry is the
final opponent for Tampa through their first round of conference
play, which marks the Spartans' eighth game of the 16-match
conference rotation.
