TAMPA, Fla. - Behind the dual threat of Marissa Lisenbee and Jessica Wagner, the No. 5 University of Tampa volleyball team swept Embry-Riddle, 3-0 on Thursday evening in the Bob Martinez Athletics Center.
The win gives the Spartans a 19-4 overall record while the visiting Eagles drop to 12-11 on their 2015 campaign.
Seniors Lisenbee and Wagner were relentless on offense, combining for 30 kills at a sweltering .481 attack percentage as a tandem. Lisenbee led all players with 16 kills, as the right side swung at a strong .438 mark while nearly missing a double-double with nine digs. Middle blocker Wagner blasted a 14-kill salvo at a blistering .545 efficiency in addition to a trio of solo blocks at the net. The duo would each finish with 17 points apiece.
Junior Gina Clarke dished 40 assists for the Spartans, adding six digs and a kill while tuning the UT offense.
Middle blocker Demery Zachery continues to be a wall at the net, stopping three ERAU attacks for UT. Libero Logan Holanchock and outside hitter Allee Stelogeannis anchored the back row, notching 14 and 11 digs, respectively.
Lisenbee began the contest with a seven-kill rampage in the opening set, needing just 11 swings without committing an attack error. Wagner was just as lethal as she terminated five kills in six swings without an attack error. Clarke kept the duo in tempo with 15 assists as Tampa claimed the first set by a 25-20 score over the Eagles.
The Spartans swift-swinging offense continued to dominate, as Wagner and Lisenbee each put away six kills in the 25-18 second stanza. Embry-Riddle right side hitter Ashley Humphrey swatted four kills in five swings (.800) to lead the Eagles attack. Freshman Holanchock was able to stifle the rest of the ERAU offense, picking up six digs as Tampa held the Eagles to a .125 attack percentage in the set.
UT used the serve of Kelsey Watts to turn a nine-point rally in the third set, taking an 18-9 lead as Embry-Riddle burned both of its timeouts on the rally. Junior Stelogeannis posted four kills to lead UT as Tampa ravaged the Eagles by a score of 25-17 to complete the sweep.
