Spartans Drop Road SSC Match
BOCA RATON, Fla. – The University of Tampa traveled to South Florida to take on the Lynn University Fighting Knights. The Fighting Knights were able to walk away with the victory as they defeated the Spartans 3-1. With the loss, UT falls to 20-7 overall and 13-3 in conference play. LU improves to 22-4 and 13-2 in conference play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Lynn was able to jump out to an early lead on Tampa as they held an early 10-6 lead. The Spartans were not able to close the gap between the two teams as Lynn took the first set by a final score of 25-18. The LU defense was stout, as the held UT to a .059 hitting percentage.
Lynn controlled the second set as they were able to hold a lead as big as six at 20-14. UT was able to mount a bit of a comeback as they pulled within two points at 23-21. The Fighting Knights would go on to score two of the next three points as they took the set 25-22.
The third set was close, as the teams would be all squared up at 15. The Spartans would score four of the next five points, as they took the lead 19-16. LU was able to battle back as the game would be tied up five more times in the set before the Spartans were able to pull out the 27-25 set victory.
The fourth set was a close one again as the teams would be tied on seven separate occasions. Late in the set, the Spartans held a 23-21 lead before the Fighting Knights would score the next four points to take the set 25-23.
INSIDE THE STATS
- Sorrel Houghton led the way for Tampa as she had 17 kills.
- Kamari Potter would finish the night with 14 kills.
- Katie McKiel collected a double-double as she had 16 digs and 13 kills.
- Melissa Elias also had a double-double with 13 assists and 12 digs.
- Sammy Mueller had 32 assist and 14 digs.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
- Tampa is now 44-4 all-time against Lynn.
- The loss snaps the Spartans 16 game winning streak.
- The two teams have now split the regular-season series.
UP NEXT
The Spartans will return to action on Saturday as they face the Nova Southeastern University Sharks. The game is set to begin at 4:00 p.m.
