#1 Spartans Land Win Over ’Lopes
TAMPA, Fla. - The University of Tampa baseball team took the final game of its three-game weekend series against Grand Canyon University on Sunday. The 4-1 win was the only game of the series that was not decided in extra innings.
Junior Ben Brown started on the mound for Tampa. Brown threw for seven complete innings while allowing only four hits, one earned run, and striking out six 'Lopes. Of those four hits, three came to start the game in the first. A sacrifice fly would then bring in the only GCU run of the contest.
The Spartans managed two two-run innings in the matchup. Adding two to take the lead in the second and later extending it by two more in the fifth, the Spartans were able to create a 4-1 advantage that they would keep until the final out.
Tampa offense tallied 10 hits off the Grand Canyon pitching staff. Junior Anthony Caronia went 3-for-4 on the day with three singles as senior Andrew Jones went 2-for-3 with one double, one walk, and one RBI.
Also collecting a RBI in the game was Damon Elder, who went 2-for-4 with two singles, Eric Grabe, and Connor Obrochta. Sophomore Zach Gawrych also notched two singles to hit .500 on the day.
Senior southpaw Justin Leith pitched one inning of relief for the Spartans, holding the 'Lopes to their one run. Righty Evan Stobbs came in to close out the game. Stobbs allowed two hits, struck out one, and recorded his fifth save of the year.
The win advances Brown to 3-1 on the season as the Spartans' record improves to 16-3. The loss forces Grand Canyon to fall to 9-14.
