No.8 Tampa Set To Take On Walsh In Weekend Contest
The University of Tampa Spartans men's lacrosse team is set to faceoff against the Walsh University Cavaliers Sunday afternoon.
TAMPA, Fla. - The No.8 University of Tampa men's lacrosse team is riding a wave of momentum, after defeating the No.5 Adelphi Panthers Friday night, but the celebration is cut short as they are welcome in the Walsh Cavaliers for a Sunday afternoon matinee, at the Naimoli Family Athletic Complex.
UT enters the matchup with a record of 2-0. Last time out, the Spartans battled the Panthers of Adelphi University and came out on top in convincing fashion defeating AU 19-11. The match was the stage for Andrew Kew, who started the season as an unknown freshman and is quickly becoming a force to be reckoned with, as he notched eight goals in the contest setting a new school record.
Tampa's attack has a plethora of threats as 11 different players have scored goals, but is fueled by a the three-headed monster that is Conor Whipple eight goals, Mike Morris four goals and Kew with 13 goals. Whipple also serves as the catalyst of the offense with his team-high eight assists.
Defensively, Tampa has a mix of experienced and young players, but talented group of defenders none the less including Marty Heyn, Nick Balzano, Charlie Cummins and A.J. Ferraro.
In net, the Spartans have gone with a rotation of netminders, but the two keepers of record thus far transfer T.J. Greenhill with a 1-0 record, earning a victory against the Tusculum College Pioneers, and freshman Bryan Karn with a record of 1-0, tallying his lone victory against the No.5 Adelphi Panthers. Both players have seen copious amounts of field time combining for 107 of the 120 minutes of action to this point in the season.
WU comes into the game sporting a 0-1 record, after falling to the Florida Southern College Mocs 9-8 in overtime. Bryan Crim, their leading scorer from 2015, started off the year hot as he registered four goals in the loss to FSC. The Cavaliers returned a majority of their squad from last season, and will look to bounce back from the 3-10 finish just a year ago.
