Spartans Stomp Cavaliers In Sunday Matinee
The University of Tampa men's lacrosse team extended its win streak to three games on Sunday afternoon.
TAMPA, Fla. - No. 8 University of Tampa men's lacrosse team extended its win streak to three games on Sunday afternoon as it defeated Walsh University by a score of 15-8, at the Naimoli Family Athletic and Intramural Complex.
The Spartans attack was led by the dynamic duo of freshman Andrew Kew and Conor Whipple, combining for 10 of UT's 15 goals. Kew's seven-goal performance tied Jake Rooney for second all-time in goals scored in a single-game. Whipple would also finish the day with two assists to his credit. Also, torching the twine for the home team were Jake Schmidt, Matt Bilak, Luke Robideaux and Alex Patton.
On the defensive side of the ball, Tampa put in a real team effort as the young group of defenders gobbled up 39 ground balls and forced eight turnovers as a team. UT won the battle in ground balls as they out-scooped the Cavaliers in each period of play.
The key defensive performers in the match were Nick Balzano with two forced turnovers, and Patton with eight groundballs. Picking up the win in net for the Spartans was freshman goalkeeper Bryan Karn, improving to 2-0 on the season.
Tampa went 22-for-26 in faceoffs, turning in a career day at the faceoff X was Patton, claiming 20 faceoff wins in the matchup in just 22 attempts, sporting a clip of 91 percent.
The Spartans also finished the day with a clearing percentage of 100, converting on all 12 opportunities.
Following the victory, Tampa improves to 3-0 on the season.
