Gawrych Sends Saints Marching
TAMPA, Fla. - With a dramatic three-run homer off the bat of Zach Gawrych, the No. 1 University of Tampa baseball team defeated Flagler College 5-4 Tuesday evening.
The eighth inning bomb extends the Spartans win streak to 22 consecutive victories, improving their record to 29-1. The Saints dip to 16-14 with the late-inning loss.
Senior Gawrych ended the evening with a 2-for-4 performance, including the game-winning home run and four total RBI for Tampa. Fellow senior Michael Danner notched up three hits, including a RBI triple as UT scored five runs in the seventh and eighth to pick up the come-from-behind win.
Flagler was in the driver's seat for most of the game as starter Danny Brown turned out a masterful performance, limiting the top team in the nation to three hits over six scoreless innings. UT capitalized, scoring five runs in the final two innings to continue its winning ways.
Lefty Michael Calkins (5-0) shutdown the Saints attack, hurling three scoreless frames while striking out two in his relief appearance. Kevin McNorton shut the door on FC, pitching the final three outs to earn his sixth save of the season.
Flagler reliever Mike O'Reilly (3-1) was tabbed with the loss in his inning of work, allowing the three-run homer.
