Tampa Gets Out-Scored Against No. 1 Nova Southeastern

Fort Lauderdale, Fla – The University of Tampa Men's Basketball team opened up the New Year with a matchup against the No. 1 team in the nation, Nova Southeastern.

All-time series: This was the fortieth meeting between these two programs, Tampa trails the all-time series 30-19. 

HOW IT HAPPENED: 

FIRST HALF: Tampa started the first half strong, showcasing resilience and energy with key plays like Tyson Leitao's early layup to tie the game at 2-2 and his tip-in to narrow the gap to 8-4. Trey Lane and Amarion Nimmers made impactful contributions, with Lane sinking consecutive three-pointers to energize the team and reduce the deficit to 20-27. Ryan Blount also provided a crucial boost, hitting a three-pointer to keep Tampa in the fight at 14-23. Defensively, the Spartans capitalized on Nova Southeastern's turnovers, including a key steal by Leitao that led to a scoring opportunity. Tampa's hustle on offensive rebounds, particularly from Leitao and Lane, demonstrated their determination to stay competitive.

SECOND HALF: Tampa's second half featured strong offensive moments as they steadily chipped away at Nova Southeastern's lead. Lane energized the Spartans early with a clutch three-pointer, sparking a series of efficient plays. Leitao and Nimmers showcased their scoring ability, contributing with key layups and a three-pointer that kept Tampa within striking distance.
B.J. Schaeffer and Kaden Froebe delivered crucial assists, creating opportunities for their teammates and maintaining offensive rhythm. Defensive rebounds by Schaeffer and Blount highlighted Tampa's determination to control the glass and create fast-break chances.

• Nimmers led all Spartans with 19 points.
• Leitao finished with 14 points, seven rebounds, four assists. He now has moved into 9^th all-time in Tampa history for career rebounds with 773.
• Blount had 15 points off the bench.
