
UT Sweeps SSC Weekly Awards
Trio of Tampa freshmen awarded for performances last week.
MELBOURNE, Fla. – The University of Tampa men's lacrosse team has swept the Sunshine State Conference Player of the Week honors. Freshman Andrew Kew has been named Offensive Player of the Week, A.J. Ferraro has been selected as Defensive Player of the Week, and Alex Patton earned Specialist of the Week.
Athletes of the Week are chosen from a pool of nominees for their performances during the week of February 15 - 21, 2016. Athletes are nominated by Sports Information Directors of member institutions.
Kew had a career performance in the Spartans victory over the No. 5 Adelphi Panthers, as the freshman attacker notched a school record eight goals in the 19-11 victory Friday night. Kew followed up the performance with a seven goal game in the Tampa 15-8 victory over the Walsh Cavaliers. In three games this season, Kew has tallied 20 goals.
In the game over No. 5 Adelphi, Ferraro caused three turnovers while picking up six groundballs on the night. Ferraro was key for the defense, as they caused 11 turnovers on the night and hauled in 38 groundballs. He would also add another three groundballs to his tally in the game against Walsh.
Patton wins Specialist of the Week as the sophomore went 20-for-22 in face-offs against the Cavaliers. The sophomore also picked up eight groundballs in the victory. He would also go on to add a goal and two assists.
Tampa will be back in action on Saturday as they travel up to Gaffney, South Carolina to take on the defending champions, Limestone College. The Saints enter the matchup as the top-ranked team in the nation.
