Easy Victory Gives Tampa Sixth Straight Win
TAMPA, Fla. - Fresh off a victory over #11 Valdosta State, The University of Tampa women's basketball team cruised to an 80-54 victory over visiting Puerto Rico-Mayaguez. The Spartans now stand at 6-1 on the year as UPRM drops to 0-3.
The Spartans never trailed in the game, though the first 10 minutes stayed within six points. After opening up an 11 point lead, UT allowed Mayaguez to trim the lead to 41-32 at half. Tampa pulled away in the second half, extending the lead to as many as 28 points.
The well rounded scoring effort saw Sunshine State Conference Player of the Week Sheena Walton score a team-high 15 points, though three other Spartans reached double figures. Erica Woodard added 12 as Tiara Cook and Kym Taylor each contributed 12 off the bench.
DeShaydia Mackey had a team-high nine rebounds, as Taylor and Cook each had eight. Walton and Taylor led UT with four offensive rebounds apiece.
Tampa, who shot 51.9 percent from the field, held the Janes to a 35.5 mark. Walton helped the cause by making 6-7 from the field as Cook was 4-5.
The Spartans return to action on Saturday as they travel to Rollins for the SSC opener at 2 p.m. UT returns home on Thursday, December 6, when they host West Georgia in a rematch from last Friday.
