Angela Guiu Leads Tampa Past Eckerd
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - The University of Tampa women's basketball team got back into the winning column with a 68-54 victory over Eckerd. The Spartans improve to 11-3 on the year and 4-1 in SSC play while the Tritons fall to 9-5 and 0-5 in league action.
The Tritons got out to an early lead in the first half, scoring the game's first two baskets to open a 5-0 advantage. Tampa stormed back with a 14-2 run that put it in the lead with just over 13 minutes remaining. The two teams each scored 22 points in the final 13 minutes of the half to go into the break with the Spartans leading 36-29.
Tampa picked up its game in the second half, outscoring the Tritons 32-25 in the half. Angela Guiu scored 15 in the second half while Hailee Sullivan added seven to fuel the Spartans.
Guiu enjoyed a career game, scoring a new career high of 24 points on 7-8 shooting from three-point range. The seven threes also represented a new career high for the UT point guard. She also had three rebounds and three steals in 40 minutes of action.
Sullivan added 13 points while Alexa Kane also had double figures with 12. Sheena Walton led Tampa with eight rebounds and two blocks as she ran her consecutive games with a block to 45.
UT enjoyed a hot hand throughout the contest, shooting 51 percent from the field. The Spartans, who made 10 long-range shots, enjoyed a 62.5 percent mark from beyond the arc.
UT will return home to continue SSC play as it hosts Barry on Saturday at 2 p.m.
