Spartans Come Through in the Clutch to Top Florida Southern
TAMPA, Fla. - The University of Tampa women's basketball team won its third straight game with a 72-69 victory over archrival Florida Southern College. UT improves to 13-3 and 6-1 in the SSC while the Mocs drop to 10-7 and 3-4 in conference play.
The first half remained close, though Florida Southern held the lead for the first 12 minutes. UT took its first lead on a pair of Erica Woodard free throws with 8:09 left in the half. After six lead changes, the game went to halftime deadlocked at 30-30.
The second half remained close, with each team having their opportunities. The Moccasins took a brief lead before Tampa took the lead, which it held until the 4:41 mark. With Florida Southern enjoying a 67-66 lead with under two minutes remaining, Angela Guiu put the Spartans up for good with a three-pointer at 1:33.
Sheena Walton led Tampa with 23 points and 11 rebounds while also turning in nine blocked shots. It marked the 47th straight game that Walton has registered a block.
Alexa Kane added 14 points while Brittany Ridley tallied a career high 12 points off the bench for the Spartans. Guiu added 11 points on 3-5 three-point shooting. Kane added a team high eight assists while Walton was the lone UT player with a steal.
The Spartans are back in action on Saturday as they entertain Palm Beach Atlantic at 2 p.m., in a non-conference game. The Sailfish will enter the contest with a record of 1-20, with their lone victory coming over Florida Memorial on November 16. PBA is looking to put an end to their current 12 game losing streak.
