Tampa Records Regular Season Sweep of SSC Rival Florida Southern
LAKELAND, Fla. - The University of Tampa women's basketball team completed a regular season sweep of Sunshine State Conference rival Florida Southern College, defeating the Moccasins by a score of 74-62. With one regular season game remaining, Tampa improves to 21-5 and 12-3 in SSC play while the Mocs drop to 15-12 and 7-9 in conference.
Florida Southern built a quick lead, taking a 13-4 advantage just five minutes into the contest. The lead was stretched to double figures as FSC took a 10-point lead at the 12:55 and 12:28 marks of the first half.
Trailing 22-12, Tampa went on a 9-0 run to close the gap to three and chipped the Moccasin lead to 27-26 with 5:04 on the clock. Florida Southern then responded with a 6-1 run over the final five minutes to take a 33-27 lead to the half.
The second half belonged to the Spartans as it took less than five minutes for UT to take a 38-37 lead. After four lead changes, Tampa grabbed the lead for good with 11:09 remaining in the game. With a 52-51 lead, Tampa went on a 16-2 run over a four minute span to take control of the game with 4:03 left to play.
Sheena Walton led Tampa with 21 points, seven rebounds and four blocked shots, which were all team highs. On the night, Walton connected on 9-14 shots from the field.
Erica Woodard also enjoyed a solid performance, scoring 19 points to go with 11 rebounds. Eight of Woodard's 11 boards came on the offensive end. Alexa Kane also contributed 12 points for Tampa as she also led the team with six assists.
Tampa returns to action on Saturday as it hosts Lynn at 2 p.m.
