
The University of Tampa Women's Lacrosse Team Will Host Young Harris in Home Opener
The University of Tampa women's lacrosse team looks to defeat the Mountain Lions for the second time in program history in the team's home opener.
TAMPA, Fla. - The University of Tampa women's lacrosse team will host the Young Harris College Mountain Lions on Wednesday, at 7 p.m. The meeting marks the second matchup between the schools. Tampa having won the first.
The Matchup: University of Tampa (1-2) vs. Young Harris College (4-1)
- In the last meeting, on April 16, 2014, the University of Tampa Spartans defeated the Mountain Lions 16-3. The Spartans have six returners from this matchup, all of whom are now seniors, Amanda Voges, Kelly Austin, Jamie Austin, Sara Barrett, Alexis D'Amico, and Marissa Killpack. Of the returners, Voges helped lead the Spartans to victory with one recorded goal while D'Amico and Killpack also contributed to the 'W' by blocking the Mountain Lions from scoring on six different occasions.
Date/Time: Wednesday, March 1 at 7 p.m.
Last Time Out: Tampa defeated the Converse College Valkyries 21-5 on their first road weekend in Spartanburg, S.C. on February 26. Freshman Claire Swanson and Maggie Gladden led the Spartan's offense with four goals and one assist each. Voges also recorded two goals, leaving her just three away from a career high of 100. Junior Amanda Rom also had a stand out performance with two goals, three assists, and nine blocked goals.
About the Spartans: The Spartans finished the 2016 season with an overall record of 5-10, and made it to the Sunshine State Conference tournament for the first time in program history. Going into the 2017 season, they return their top three offensive weapons, Voges, Carraway, and Rom. Voges was also a 2016 Second-Team All-SSC selection. Nine freshman join the Spartans this year. Combined, Swanson, Gladden, and Carly Vaccaro have 13 of the Spartan's total 34 goals on the season.
About the Mountain Lions: The Mountain Lions are currently 4-1, 3-1 in the Gulf South Conference. The Mountain Lions are led offensively by juniors Kendra Parenteau and Nicole Kernohan with 20 and 15 goals respectively on the season. Additionally, the Mountain Lions return sophomore defensive players Hannah Sacristan and Sarah Bialecki. Junior Julia Darroch returns as the Mountain Lions goal keeper with an average save percentage of 42.9%.
Milestone Within Reach: Senior Amanda Voges currently sits at 97 career goals, just three away from 100. Voges is the all-time goal leader for the University of Tampa women's lacrosse team and will be the first Spartan to reach this milestone.
Series History: Tampa takes the sweep, with a 1-0 record against the Mountain Lions in the all-time series. The first and only time the teams met (April of 2014), the game was played in Young Harris, Ga. at the Mountain Lion's Field.
Tickets: Tickets for are $5 for adults, senior citizens and coaches. Children under 12 will be admitted free. UT students, faculty and staff will be admitted free with a valid student ID.
