MIAMI SHORES, Fla.-The second-ranked University of Tampa Spartans suffered their first loss of the season to the Lions of Texas A&M-Commerce by a score of 3-2. The Spartans fall to 4-1 on the season while the Lions improve to 2-1.
Tampa had an unusual start as they opened the second period trailing 1-0, thanks to a header by Dana Deerinwater; which was assisted by Meagan Lasley. Tamara Geel's header added to the Lions' lead by a well executed corner by Megan Monroe, 2-0.
The Spartans began there attack as Shelby Kuni scored off a turnover inside the five yard box, which was assisted by Nicole Murphy, to put the Spartans on the board.
Lacy Alexander answered quickly as she pushed past the goalie to put the Lions up 3-1.
Shelby Kuni countered by a cross up the left side by Marissa Bernard, to put the Spartans within one, but could not answer the Lions tough play.
The Spartans are back in action Sunday at 11am, as they take on the number-six ranked Hilltoppers of St. Edward's University.
