TAMPA, Fla. - The University of Tampa women's soccer team had its opportunities but failed to overcome as it fell to the Lions by a score of 1-0. Tampa is now 12-2-1 overall and 4-1 in the Sunshine State Conference while Saint Leo is 13-2 and 6-1 in SSC play as it moves even with the Spartans atop the league standings.
The Tampa loss also snaps its school record home unbeaten streak at 43 games.
The first half was played primarily on the Saint Leo side as the Spartan offense outshot the Lions 6-2 in the first half. Of the shots, four of UT's were on goal compared to one by the Lions. Saint Leo's lone shot on goal came on a penalty kick that was converted by Jennifer O'Connor at 44:00.
Saint Leo came out strong in the second half, outshooting Tampa 7-6 in the period. The Lions were also aided by goalkeeper Lauren Hudson, who registered seven saves. Three of the saves came in the second half for Hudson.
Tampa returns to action on Saturday as it faces Barry in its final regular season home match. The game is slated to begin at 7 p.m.
