TAMPA, Fla.- The third-ranked University of Tampa women's soccer team defeated Barry University by a score of 6-0. The Spartans improve to 13-2-1 on the season, and 5-1 in Sunshine State Conference action. The Buccaneers fall to 6-9, and 1-6 in conference action.
The Spartans used six different players to put away a pesky Buccaneer team on senior night, as four of the six seniors scored one goal a piece, all in the first half. Senior Alison Penland scored the first goal of the night in the opening two minutes of the game. Penland was assisted by Courtney Evans who claimed her 12th assist of the year. Evans now needs seven more assists to break the school record for indiviadual season assists.
Senior Nicole Murphy asnwered 26 minutes later on a unassisted goal. Stefanie Huertas, another graduting senior, had her career highlight, scoring her first collegiate goal off a penalty kick. The last senior to leave her mark at Pepin Stadium was Marissa Bernard who made a great move to evade the defender, as she hit a blast into the top left corner, giving the Spartans a 4-0 lead. Bernard was assisted by freshman Lauren Hammond.
Shannon Agnew came off the bench and recorded her first goal of the season, an unassisted score. Lindsay O'Bryan was the last Spartan to record a goal on the night as she also came off the bench and scored an unassisted goal.
Senior goalkeeper Shannon Aitken recorded her eighth shutout for the season as well as recording her 13th win of the season. Aitken now stands at 175 saves for her career, needing five saves to break the individual career record for saves.
The Spartans are in action on Wednesday, as they travel to St. Pete to take on Eckerd College at 7pm.
