ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - The 22nd-ranked University of Tampa women's soccer team defeated Eckerd College by a score of 2-0. The Spartans improve to 14-2-1 and 6-1 in Sunshine State Conference play, while the Tritons fall to 0-17-1 and 0-7-1 in conference action.
The Spartans had opportunities to put the game away early but could not capitalize on any as the game was deadlocked until the 73rd minute when Maria Mohammed put the Spartans up 1-0 on an unassisted goal. Shelby Kuni returned to form on the next UT goal as the Spartans leading scorer netted an unassisted score in the 86th minute of the game.
There was no doubt the Spartans were in control of the game, despite having to rally for two late goals. The Spartans outshot the Tritons 25-1 and had a 7-1 advantage on corner kicks.
Shannon Aitken recorded no saves as the Spartan defense shut down any attempt to make it across midfield. Aitken recorded her 14th win of the season for the Spartans, while posting her ninth shutout of the 2007 campaign.
The Spartans are back in action Saturday as they travel to Melbourne where they will face Florida Tech as they conclude regular season play.
