National Champs Place Five on All-America Team
TAMPA, Fla. - The University of Tampa claimed the NCAA Women's Division II national championship, and now claims the lion's share of spots on the 2007 NSCAA/adidas All-America Team.
Five Spartans dot the lineup, including three first-team selections: goalkeeper Shannon Aitken (Land O'Lakes, Fla.), defender Ashley Flateland (Fox Island, Wash.) and forward Shelby Kuni (Houston, Texas). Defender Emily Stack (Palm Harbor, Fla.) and midfielder Courtney Evans (DeLand, Fla.) were second-team selections. Aitken and Kuni were among seven players who were repeat selections to the honor.
Aitken concluded her senior season with a record of 20-2-3 in goal with a 0.61 GAA. She allowed just 16 goals in 25 matches and 2354:46 minutes of play. She also registered a school-record 14 shutouts as she concludes her UT career with a school-record 40. Aitken's 59 career wins is also a UT record.
Flateland anchored a Spartan defense that allowed just 16 goals compared to 52 by UT. She also recorded five goals, one assist and 11 points. Of her goals, three were game-winners.
Kuni led UT in scoring as a junior for the third straight season. With 14 goals, she now has 53 in her career as she eclipsed Tai Kirklin's school-record this season. She also tallied six assists and 34 points. Her four game-winning goals also represented a team-high.
Stack was also a mainstay on the UT defense as her 2,345 minutes were tops on the team. She was also credited with three assists, while being one of five Spartans to start all 25 games.
Evans was third on the team in scoring with 43 points, though she led Tampa with 14 assists. She recorded three goals as she also started all 25 contests.
