Spartans Top Newberry To Notch Second Weekend Shutout
COLUMBUS, Ga. - The University of Tampa (2-0) women's soccer team registered its second shutout of the weekend with a 1-0 triumph over Newberry College (0-2) in a match that was played at Columbus State University.
"The girls played very well today and showed great composure and maturity in their play," says head coach Gerry Lucey. "We faced an opponent that was difficult to break down with the amount of players behind the ball. I was really pleased with the way we knocked the ball around and tried to penetrate the opposing backline."
The Spartans netted the game-winner in the 76th minute as Luana Miessa found the net off a centering pass by teammate Marta Bertsos.
Tampa outshot Newberry by a 20-2 mark as freshman Leah Cesanek made two saves en route to her second shutout of the young season.
"We improved from our performance on Friday night and once again were able to get everyone into the game," says Lucey. "The level of play was maintained, which says a lot for our incoming players and the amount of work they've accomplished in the past three weeks. We still have a long road ahead but it's great to begin with two wins and playing attractive soccer."
