Barry Slips Past Tampa In SSC Contest
MIAMI, SHORES, Fla. - Despite outshooting its opponent by a 16-9 margin, The University of Tampa (6-2, 1-1 SSC) women's soccer team dropped a 3-1 decision at Barry University (6-2, 2-0 SSC) in a Sunshine State Conference meeting.
"This was a hugely disappointing result," says head coach Gerry Lucey. "We dominated the entire game but came up empty handed. The team played very well and moved the ball around nicely. Unfortunately our composure in front of goal was missing. We also committed some basic defensive mistakes that Barry was able to take full advantage of."
With the contest scoreless through the first 26 minutes, the teams traded a goal apiece in less than a minute of play. Barry's Emma Karp gave the Bucs a brief lead at 26:26 before UT's Carolyn Simon hit an equalizer at 27:24.
Barry's Sylvia Lugo registered the game-winner in the 76th minute on a rebound. The Bucs would stretch its lead to a two-goal advantage on an own goal with two minutes remaining on the clock.
"The disappointing part is that we've gone through these errors so many times yet the same players are making the same mistakes," says Lucey. "We are still pretty young and had seven freshmen on the field at times today. Regardless of the youth, it's not good enough to continue making the same mistakes each practice and game. Today we paid the price."
In addition to outshooting the Buccaneers, Tampa also held a 9-5 advantage in shots on goal. The Spartans also took five corners, compared to two for the Bucs.
Freshman Leah Cesanek started her eighth game in goal, completing the match with a pair of saves while facing 10 shots.
"We hope to learn from these mistakes and move forward," comments Lucey. "We have another conference game on Tuesday where we will need to come out strong."
UT returns home where it will host Eckerd College on Tuesday at 5 p.m. at Pepin Stadium. Tampa will offer a webcast and live stats through www.tampaspartans.com.
