Spartans Shutout Mocs in SSC Victory
TAMPA, Fla. - The University of Tampa (7-4-2, 1-2-1 SSC) women's soccer team defeated Florida Southern College (7-4-1, 2-2-1 SSC) Friday night by a score of 3-0.
"The team was absolutely brilliant tonight," says head coach Gerry Lucey. "We played a complete 90 minutes and had a great attitude from the start. This was such a huge game to get back on track in the standings."
The Spartan's took a late first half lead against the Mocs when Natalie Gibson netted her second goal of the season at minute 41. Amber Pennybaker was credited with her second assist of the season on the goal.
Marta Bertsos scored the Spartan's second goal, her first of the season, in minute 59. Gabby Russo registered the assist with the Bertsos goal.
Russo recorded her second assist during second half when Lauren Moore increased Tampa's lead to 3-0. Russo now leads the team with 10 assists on the season.
"We haven't beaten FSC in a couple of years and the senior class was motivated to change that stat" states Lucey. "We certainly did it in style against one of the top teams in the region and nation. To hold a potent offense like Southern to just one shot on target was incredible. Our defense has been marvelous again."
Emelie Karstrom earned the win in the shutout against Florida Southern to improve her record to 7-3-2. Karstrom also had one save during the shutout.
"However, this is just three points and we need to get another win on Sunday to make it a memorable week," continues Lucey. "We are still battling to gain a playoff place so hopefully our motivation will be intense on Sunday too against Barry University."
Tampa's next game will be at home Sunday against Barry University at 2 p.m. A live broadcast and live stats will be available through www.tampaspartans.com.
"If we can get on a strong run we feel we are as good as anyone in the nation," comments Lucey.
