Tampa Falls in SSC Matchup to Rollins, 1-0
TAMPA, Fla. - The University of Tampa (8-3, 3-1 SSC) women's soccer team fell to Rollins College (5-4, 2-1 SSC) in a Sunshine State Conference (SSC) matchup by a score of 1-0 on Saturday night at Pepin Stadium.
"Tonight we were second best to a strong Rollins squad," says head coach Gerry Lucey. "We have a young team and were taught a lesson in hunger and desire. We were nowhere near good enough in any aspect of our game and deservedly lost."
The match was tightly contested throughout the game, as Rollins' Laura Piedrahita registered the lone goal in minute 35 to give Rollins their second SSC victory this season.
"The goal we allowed was a defensive blunder centrally at the back which was easily preventable" comments Lucey. "We will make adjustments on the practice field and hopefully improve significantly at Barry on Tuesday."
Kori Butterfield, the Spartans' goalie, had a strong game despite giving up the game winning goal. Butterfield tallied three saves over 90 minutes played.
"We need to make significant improvements in individual decision making if collectively we want to achieve our goals," says Lucey.
Jess Frank and Megan Lawrence each recorded a shot on goal in the loss. Lawrence added three total shots during the game.
"This loss brings the conference even tighter, which is exactly what we didn't want," concludes Lucey.
Tampa will be back in action on Tuesday when they will head to Barry University for a 6 p.m. SSC matchup.
