TAMPA, Fla.-The University of Tampa Spartans (1-0) defeated the Warner University Royals (0-1) on Thursday night by a score of 2-0 at the Naimoli Family Complex. The victory marks the 199th win in program history.
The 50 minute lightning delay did not faze the Spartans who came out of the first half in the lead with a 1-0 score. Gabby Russo scored the goal off a cross from Jenny Karl in the 20th minute of play to give the Spartans the lead. Strong offense registered 20 shots in the first half while the Royals remained at zero.
The Spartans widened the margin with a late goal in the second half. Cina Salemi set up the corner kick in the 76th minute with Emily Jones to complete the play. Both Cici Gonzalez and Alyson Gregorowicz logged six shots throughout the game bringing the team to a total of 38.
The Spartan defense kept goalie Kori Butterfield from seeing any action in tonight's game.
Tampa returns to the field on Saturday morning at 11 a.m. at Pepin Stadium. Live stats and an audio broadcast will be available through TampaSpartans.tv.
