Defensive Effort Propels No. 19 Spartans to Another Shutout
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - The No. 19 University of Tampa (6-0-1) women's soccer team notched its fifth consecutive shutout with a 2-0 win over Nova Southeastern University (2-1) in a South Region matchup.
Junior Cici Gonzalez scored the game-winner and added an assist for Tampa goals as she has now scored four goals with four assists in the past three matches for the Spartans.
The first Spartan goal came at 34:20 when Gonzalez netted the first score of the night, on a score that was assisted by sophomore Chelsea Martin. UT would double the lead at 75:19 on a goal by senior Gabby Russo that was assisted by freshman Andrea Delgado and Gonzalez.
UT, who did not allow a shot for the entire first half, outshot its opponent 11-9 on the night. Gonzalez led all Spartans with four shots while Lauren Moore tallied three.
Freshman goalkeeper Caroline Frykgard registered her third shutout of the season as she finished with four saves.
Tampa returns to action on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m., at Pepin Stadium when it welcomes Florida Southern College for a non-conference contest. Fans may watch the South Region contest on TampaSpartans.tv, or follow live stats on Tampa.StatBroadcast.com.
