Spartans And Blazers Square Off In Defensive Battle
VALDOSTA, Ga. -The Tampa Spartan's women's soccer team traveled north to take on the Valdosta State Blazers. After 110 minutes of action, neither side could find an edge as the match ended in a nil-nil draw.
The entire match was a hard fought defensive battle with neither side giving way. Tampa outshot Valdosta state 10-6 on the night and blanked the Blazers in both overtime periods as they failed to register a shot.
Stepping up big for their clubs were keepers Caroline Frykgard of UT and McCall Gardner of VSU as both players hauled in several key saves in the contest. The most notable saves that kept the Spartans off the board was a PK attempt by Tampa's Cici Gonzalez at the 60-minute mark and a header by defender Ali Robinson in the 96th minute.
Tampa netminder Frykgard and the defensive unit played tough all night and made some vital stops on set piece plays in the late goings. A prime example of their great defensive play was a corner taken in the 92nd minute by Valdosta State's Erin Hill.
The Spartans return to action on Wednesday as they travel to Saint Petersburg, Fla. to take on the Eckerd Tritons. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. ET, live stats and a broadcast will be available for fans to follow the action.
