HOW IT HAPPENED:
1st Half | The first 10 minutes of the game belonged to the home team as the Spartans looked to find their rhythm. A sluggish start and missed communication in the back line let a Royals player slip into the box and get to a ball just before a charging keeper to tap the ball across the goal line with just under ten minutes played. Tampa rebounded from the goal and was able to begin to build on their play. With almost 20 minutes played in the match, a ball was played to the top of the box defended by the home side. Mack Beidleman was able to bring it down and the home goalkeeper was caught off her line which allowed Erika Peitersen to take a shot into an empty net and tie the game up. The Spartans kept up the pressure and were unlucky to not go up at halftime.
2nd Half | UT came out with more energy to start the second half as they chased the goal that would give them the lead. They controlled the possession of the game and were able to get chances into the box but were missing the final touch in the area. With about 15 minutes left, Queens had their best chance of the game since the early stages of the game as one of their players took a shot that was just over the outstretched hand of Caroline Frykgard and rattled the crossbar and went out past the end line. The final ten minutes of regulation belonged to UT. They pressured Queens and had them on their heels but luck would not be on their side.
OT1 | Both teams went back and forth as they looked for the winning goal. Tampa had the fresher legs as they had substituted throughout the game but were unable to find a breakthrough despite keeping the pressure on the Royals for most of the 10 minutes.
OT2 | The visitors dominated the final ten minutes of play. The ball was kept on the offensive end by UT and most of the possessions by Queens ended with a kick out and across the field looking to clear the area and be able to catch their breath. The Spartans had two clear chances to end the match; three minutes into the period a ball was sent into the box and confusion between the home keeper and defense allowed Emily Cady to get a touch on the ball but was unable to get it into the back of the net. Later on in the period, Nastasia Asgedom had a chance on a cross to the far post that evaded the Queens keeper but she fell inches short of ending the game.
