Tampa Finishes 2010-11 Campaign at No. 21 In Directors’ Cup Standings
ORLANDO, Fla. - The University of Tampa concluded the 2010-11 season at No. 21 in the Learfield Sports Directors' Cup standings, marking the sixth straight season that the Spartans have been in the top-25.
Tampa finished with a total of 432 points, with baseball and softball adding to the final score in the spring. UT picked up 50 points in baseball while softball added 25.
Grand Valley State (Mich.) secured its eighth straight Learfield Sports Directors' Cup, finishing with a total of 1057.50 points after winning the women's outdoor track & field national championship. The Lakers also turned in finishes of seventh in baseball, ninth in softball and 16th in men's outdoor track & field.
Central Missouri finished in the runner-up spot, its highest-ever finish in Directors' Cup history, with 779.75 total points. The Mules finished sixth in women's outdoor track & field, seventh in baseball and eighth in men's outdoor track & field.
Augustana (S.D.) finished in third place with 761.50 points after earning additional points through finishes of ninth in softball, 10th in women's outdoor track & field, 12th in men's outdoor track & field and 37th in baseball.
The Spartans were second among all Sunshine State Conference schools, with Florida Southern College placing No. 19 with 456 points. Nova Southeastern, Barry and Rollins each followed Tampa in the final standings, ranking 22-24 respectively. Other SSC schools in the standings were Lynn (59), Florida Tech (95) and St. Leo (181).
The Learfield Sports Directors' Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in up to 14 sports -- seven women's and seven men's.
