Tampa Women Win 2012-13 Mayors’ Cup Title
ORLANDO, Fla. - The University of Tampa claimed the women's division of the 2012-13 Sunshine State Conference Mayors' Cup all-sports trophy, while Saint Leo and Florida Southern shared the men's division of the award.
First presented following the 1986-87 academic year, the award was traditionally been sponsored by the mayors of the nine communities in which SSC member institutions are located.
In the women's division, points are awarded based on final conference standing in cross country, volleyball, soccer, basketball, swimming, golf, tennis, rowing, and softball. In the men's division, points are awarded for final standing in cross country, soccer, basketball, swimming, golf, tennis, and baseball. In each category, points awarded depend on the number of conference schools that sponsor the particular sport. In both divisions, points in soccer, basketball, and tennis are awarded based on regular-season finish.
Tampa led the league with a total of 50 points on the women's side. Rollins finished second with 45.5 points, followed by Nova Southeastern with 44. Florida Southern claimed fourth place with 40.5 points, and Barry was fifth with 37. Lynn occupied the sixth spot with 35 points, followed by Saint Leo with 34. Florida Tech (24.5) and Eckerd (21.5) rounded out the ranks.
Tampa's women's division title marks the first for the program since the 1992-93 academic year. The award is the Spartans' third overall, as they also won the women's Mayors' Cup trophy in 1991-92.
UT won the league championship or finished runner-up in five sports. The Spartans were SSC champions in cross country, volleyball, and swimming. Tampa placed second in women's soccer and also tied for second in softball. UT placed third in rowing. It tied for fifth in women's basketball and was sixth in tennis. The golf team finished eighth at the SSC Championship.
In the men's standings, Florida Southern and Saint Leo tied atop the ranks with 32.5 points each. Nova Southeastern placed third with 30 points. Lynn and Tampa tied for fourth with 28.5 points. Barry was sixth with 27.5 points, while Florida Tech was seventh with 26. Rollins (25.5) and Eckerd (19) rounded out the men's standings.
