The Tampa Rundown
A look at the athletic events happening this week.
ICYMI: In Case You Missed It, last week the women's golf team competed at the Rollins Invitational finishing 11th in the tournament. The No. 23 women's lacrosse team went undefeated with a perfect 3-0 record. The squad defeated the Tusculum College Pioneers 18-6, the Seton Hill Griffins 13-11, and the North Greenville University Crusaders by a final score of 22-4. The women's tennis team fished their Spring Break 2-1. They lost to St. Edwards 5-4, before going on to defeat the Texas A&M Kingsville Javelinas 8-1, and the No. 19 Tarleton State Texans 5-4. Softball swept both Southwest Minnesota State and Chestnut Hill 2-0, before going on to win the conference series over the Lynn Fighting Knights, 2-1. The baseball team also swept their midweek opponent, the No. 23 Catawba Indians, 2-0. They then traveled to Albany State where they lost the weekend series to the Golden Rams 2-1. The No. 3 ranked Tampa men's lacrosse team returned from Salt Lake City, Utah with a record of 1-1. The Spartans defeated the Westminster Griffins 19-9 on Wednesday, before suffering the team's first loss of the season to the Colorado Mesa Mavericks on Saturday by a final score of 10-9. Beach Volleyball competed in the Stetson Beach Blast, where they finished the weekend 0-3. The Spartans were defeated by the No. 16 Stetson Hatters, the Mercer Bears, and the Texas A&M Kingsville Javelinas. Also, last week, All-SSC honors were announced for swimming. We would like to congratulate first-team members Hana van Loock and McKenzie Street, second-team selections Brittany Bayes and Jessie Tobin, and honorable mention Sophie Long.
This Week's Events:
Men's Golf:
The men's golf team is currently in Palm City, Florida where they are competing at the Fox Club Golf Course in the Manhattan Invitational. The first two rounds of play will take place today, with the final round closing out the tournament tomorrow.
Beach Volleyball:
Beach Volleyball will host the Stevenson University Mustangs and the Eckerd College Tritons on Tuesday, March 13th at 2:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. respectively. At 4:00 p.m., Stevenson and Eckerd will dual against each other. Friday, March 16th, the beach volleyball team will travel to Fort Myers, Florida to compete in a dual against the Florida Gulf Coast University Eagles. This match is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
Tennis:
The women's tennis team also returns home on Tuesday, hosting a match against Augustana. This match is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m. The Spartans will then travel to Orlando, Florida on Saturday where they have a matched scheduled against West Virginia State at 11:30 a.m.
Men's and Women's Swimming:
The Spartans who qualified for the NCAA Championships will travel to Greensboro, North Carolina to compete in their respective races Wednesday through Saturday.
Women's Lacrosse:
The No. 23 Tampa women's lacrosse team will host Lenoir-Rhyne Wednesday at 5:00 p.m., before welcoming McKendree, Friday, the 16th at 7:30 p.m.
Men's Lacrosse:
The No. 3 men's lacrosse team will also play at home on Wednesday night at 8:00 p.m. against the Belmont Abbey Crusaders. Men's lacrosse will then host their second game of the week against the Lindenwood Lions Saturday, March 17th, at 1:00 p.m.
Baseball:
On Wednesday, March 14th, Baseball will host Bridgeport. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. The team will then host a weekend series against SSC foe Saint Leo. Baseball will begin at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, followed by a doubleheader on Saturday with the first game at 1:00 p.m.
Softball:
The Tampa softball team will travel to Fort Lauderdale, Florida where they will compete against the Nova Southeastern Sharks. The first game of the series, on Friday, will take place at 6:00 p.m., and then on Saturday, 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. respectively.
Men's and Women's Track:
Both the men's and women's track teams will compete at the 49er Classic, in Charlotte, North Carolina. Races will take place throughout the entire day on both Friday and Saturday.
Rowing:
On Saturday, the women's rowing team is set to compete at the Mayor's Cup Regatta in Tampa, Florida.
