The Tampa Rundown
A look at the athletic events happening this week.
ICYMI: In Case You Missed It, last week the men's golf team finished 15th at the Barry Invitational. On Tuesday, the beach volleyball team defeated Saint Leo 3-2 before going on to take fourth place at the AVCA Small College Beach Championships. Women's lacrosse lost their only contest of the week against the No. 5 Florida Tech Panthers 22-13. The men on the other hand won their only contest of the week, defeating SSC rival Florida Southern 15-9. The No. 9 ranked Spartans were then supposed to play again on Saturday against No. 6 Saint Leo, but due to weather, the game was postponed. Over the weekend, the women's golf team took home 11th place at the Harvard Invitational. Both the men's and women's track teams competed at the Embry-Riddle Invitational in Daytona Beach, Florida. On the women's team, two Spartans finished in the top-10 in the 1,500 Meter Race, and four athletes finished in the top-10 in the 5k. On the men's team, three Spartans had top-10 finishes in the 5k, one athlete finished third in the 200, and one Spartan finished 9th in the 100 Meter Hurdles. Also in Daytona, the baseball team swept the Embry-Riddle Eagles in the weekend series, winning 15-6, 13-5, and 9-4 on Friday, Saturday and Sunday respectively. The University of Tampa rowing team competed in the collegiate races at the Florida Intercollegiate Rowing Association (FIRA) Championships on Saturday at Nathan Benderson Park. In the Women's Varsity Pair Bridget Maxwell and Maddie Davidoff finished third overall, while in the Women's Varsity Double, Abbie Heupel and Hanna Vernetti finished fourth. Additionally, the Spartans finished second in the Women's Lightweight Varsity 4+ and took fourth place in the Women's Freshman/Novice 8+. Finally, on Sunday, the No. 4 Lynn Fighting Knights defeated the No. 24 Tampa Spartans in women's tennis, 7-2.
This Week's Events:
Beach Volleyball:
Tomorrow beach volleyball will host SSC rival, Florida Southern at 4:00 p.m. The team will then welcome Webber International on Wednesday, the 11th, for their final dual of the inaugural season. First serve on Wednesday is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
Men's Lacrosse:
Also on Wednesday night, the No. 9 men's lacrosse team will travel to Rollins College for a 7:00 p.m. contest against the Tars. The squad will then host the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish on Saturday, April 14th at 1:00 p.m. Be sure to come out to Naimoli Field on Saturday as this game marks senior day and the Spartans will be celebrating their seniors.
Tennis:
On Thursday, Tampa tennis welcomes the Rollins College Tars for a match slated to begin at 3:00 p.m. This will be the Spartans final home match of the 2018 season.
Men's and Women's Track:
Both the men's and women's track teams will travel to Gainesville, Florida on Friday, April 13th to compete in the Tom Jones Invitational.
Baseball:
The No. 3 ranked baseball team will host the Sailfish of Palm Beach Atlantic. Friday night, first pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. On Saturday, the Spartans will play in a doubleheader at 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. respectively.
Softball:
The softball team will travel to West Palm Beach, Florida for a weekend series against the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish. The first game of the series is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. on Friday night, with the doubleheader on Saturday slated for 12:00 and 2:00 p.m.
Women's Lacrosse:
On Saturday, April 14th, the No. 16 Tampa women's lacrosse team will also travel to West Palm Beach to take on the Sailfish. Their game will begin at 7:00 p.m. at the PBA Lacrosse Field.
Women's Golf:
Women's golf will travel to Boca Raton, Florida where they will compete in the Sunshine State Conference Championships at the Osprey Point Golf Course. The first round of the Championships will take place on Sunday, April 15th, with rounds two and three closing out the tournament on Monday and Tuesday respectively.
