Bio

Judy Alvarez went on to join the international tennis circuit, where she beat such stars as Virginia Wade and Billie Jean King. She was ranked as high as sixth in the world and is known as Tampa’s most successful tennis professional. Alvarez retired in 1964 after defeating Wade at Wimbledon to advance to the quarterfinals while beating King at the U.S. Championships. Alvarez returned to finish her four-year football scholarship at University of Tampa. UT didn't have tennis scholarships at the time, so it awarded Alvarez a football scholarship.She taught tennis throughout the 1960s and '70s. In 1972, she opened the Judy Alvarez Club Tennis and Racquetball facility in northwest Tampa and gave numerous clinics around the city. Alvarez played competitively again from 1978 to 1984.
