HOW IT HAPPENED:
v.s. No.13 Georgia State: The Spartans made one last road trip prior to travelling to the AVCA National Championships, this time to Atlanta, Georgia where the battled in the GSU Diggin Duals. In the first match of the weekend the Spartans squared off against the No. 13 ranked Panthers. The Spartans played pairings similar to those they played on Senior Day against FGCU, but did not have as much success. The 2's, Maddie Brunick and Kiersten Anderson pushed the Panthers to 3 sets, but were the only Spartans pairing to make it past the first two.
v.s. Tennessee Chattanooga: Tampa returned to the courts for the second Saturday match taking on the Mocs from Tennessee Chattanooga. Persistent to learn more about some of their new pairings, the Spartans maintained a similar lineup, the only change coming the 5's where Cassidy Ehrie and Valerie Rosenquist reignited their partnership. The persistence proved to be effective as the Spartans would take all but one pairing, their only loss coming in three sets.
v.s. UAB: Tampa would match up against the Dragons from UAB early in the morning on Sunday. The Spartans would field the same exact lineup as their Saturday afternoon match hoping to continue their success. Again, Kiersten Anderson and Maddie Brunick were impressive in their matchup, winning in straight sets. The rest of the Spartans, however, were unable to obtain similar success and were defeated in straight sets.
v.s. Austin Peay: In their final matchup prior to traveling to Hickory Point Beach to defend their title, the Spartans took on Austin Peay in chilly Georgia temps. The 1's through 4's remained the same for the Spartans, but this time playing in the 5's with Ehrie was Sara Szalay. This new pairing took their matchup in straight sets 21-14, twice. Tampa's 2's and 3's would similarly take their matchups in straight sets, and the 1's would come out on top after three. The Governors would take the 4's but Tampa secured a win to end their weekend.
UP NEXT: The Spartans Travel Back to Hickory Point Beach to defend their AVCA Small College National Title April 14th-16th. Visit avca.org for information regarding the entire tournament schedule and travel information
