HOW IT HAPPENED:
v.s. Eckerd: To kick off day 2 in St. Petersburg the Spartans took on familiar foe Eckerd College and fielded a squad with no changes in their lineup. The 2s and 4s began the first wave of matches and went 1-1. Madison Brunick and Keely Hamilton in the 4s proved a formidable force, winning their match in straight sets allowing only 20 total points. (1-0 Tampa) The 2s came out swinging in the first set winning by a large margin but would fall in the second and third bringing the duel even. (1-1 Tie) Following the 2s and 4s the 1s, 3s, and 5s, kicked off. The 5s, Kalli Cors and Alivia Horn, took care of business in two sets after facing an early deficit in the first. (2-1 Tampa) Tampa's 3s pairing of Nevaeh and Hailey Wolfe, informally known as "The Wolfe Pack", handled their match in a similar way to the 4s, allowing just 21 points over two sets. (3-1 Tampa) After the first set it looked like the 1s were going to take their match in the dominant fashion that the 4s and 3s did, but Eckerd came out on top in the second set and forced a third. In the end Tampa were able to gain an edge and take the final set of the duel. (4-1 Tampa)
v.s. PBA: After a longer than expected break, Tampa took on rival PBA under the lights in their final match of the weekend. Both the 2s and 4s took the first set of their matches but lost the second sending the first two matches of the duel into third sets. The 4s held two match points after getting to 14-12 but would ultimately fall in an extended set. (1-0 PBA) Similar to the 4s the two would be outlasted by PBA in the third set putting the Sailfish in command of the duel. (2-0 PBA) The 1s, 3s, and 5s, all came out determined to flip the script and took the first set on each of their respective courts. Julia Oswald and Payton Brunick claimed the 1s in two sets, meanwhile the 3s and 5s headed duel deciding third sets. The Wolfe Pack went point for point with PBA in the third and gained a two-point advantage late that sealed the deal for Tampa in the 3s. (2-2 Tie). Meanwhile Cors and Horn battled from behind in the 5s after going down early in the third. They would chip away and eventually take a two-point advantage after a five-point run and took the third 15-13, completing the reverse sweep for the Spartans. (3-2 Tampa)
