HOW IT HAPPENED:
v.s. Jacksonville: Tampa's weekend in Miami kicked off with a Friday morning matchup against familiar opponent Jacksonville University. The Spartans seemed to have found a steady lineup after shuffling the board throughout the early parts of the season. Julia Oswald and Payton Brunick remained in the 1s, Cassidy Ehrie and Angel Williams in the 2s, Hailey Wolfe and Nevaeh Wolfe in the 3s, Keely Hamilton and Madison Brunick in the 4s, and Kalli Cors and Alivia Horn in the 5s. Oswald and Brunick took care of business early for the Spartans taking down JU in straight sets. The 4s followed suit and took their matchup in two sets as well. (2-0 Tampa) The Wolfe twins battled hard but fell in two close sets. (2-1 Tampa) Both the 2s and 5s went to a third set following the Dolphins' wins in both second sets. The 2s were edged out by JU but Cors and Horn came out on top in the 5s to seal the duel for Tampa. (3-2 Tampa)
v.s. No. 14 FIU: In their afternoon Matchup the Spartans took on no. 14 ranked FIU. The 2s-5s all only went two sets. Tampa's 4s and 5s looked convincing, but the same was said for FIU's 2s and 3s leading to a duel-deciding 1s match. (2-2 Tie) The Spartans 1s took the first set of the matchup 23-21, but FIU responded in the second to force the third. The Panthers utilized a 5-point run and a 4-point run late in the third to capture the duel and spoil the Tampa upset. (3-2 FIU)
v.s. North Florida: Tampa began day two in South Beach with a matchup against the UNF Ospreys. Similar to the Spartans' afternoon matchup on Friday the 2s-4s matchups were all won in two sets. The 4s won their third match in a row taking the second set in convincing fashion. (1-0 Tampa) The 3s extended the second set to 24 but were just edged out. (1-1 Tie) The 3s and 5s stayed competitive throughout their matches but ultimately fell as well. (3-1 UNF) For the second match in a row, the 1s took the first set but were edged out in the second and forced to play a third. The Spartans held the advantage at 10-7 in the third, but the Ospreys rallied with a four-point run to take the lead and eventually took the set. (4-1 UNF)
v.s. Erskine: In the Spartans' final matchup of the weekend, they took on the Erskine College Flying Fleet. Tampa dominated all five matchups in the evening duel, taking each match in two sets. The Spartans allowed only 135 points over the 10 sets played for an average of 13.5 points per set. (5-0 Tampa)
UP NEXT: The Spartans travel to Columbia S.C. for the Gamecock Grand Slam at the University of South Carolina.
