Tampa Heads Into Day Two After Splitting The First Two Matches
TAMPA, Fla. - The nationally ranked Spartans split day one of the Tampa Invite 2, sweeping Coastal Carolina in the process.
Much like the previous two matches, the Spartans would start the tournament by claiming the opening pairings, leading the Chanticleers 2-0 overall. 4's pairing Keely Hamilton and Madison Brunick would conclude first after a convincing win in straight sets, 21-12, 21-15. In the 5's, senior Cassidy Ehrie and freshman, Hailey Peterson would team up and would capture the first set in a dominant fashion, 21-13. Using that momentum, Ehrie and Peterson would take control early and claim set two, 21-17. Hailey Wolfe and Nevaeh Wolfe were paired as the 3's and would drop the first set to their Coastal Carolina opponents. However, the Wolfes would respond, battling for the second and forcing the match to a third. With back-and-forth points and the audience on the edge of their seats, the Spartans' twins would claim the 3's and clinch the match for Tampa.
The Spartans would be forced to shuffle the lineups for the last duel of the day against No. 4 Florida State after the 2's pairing Angel Williams and Teona Treskounov would need to sit out. Looking to compete with one of the nation's top universities for the second time this season, Tampa came out swinging, trying to find an open court while fending off any Seminole attempts. However, it would not be enough as FSU would end up taking all five courts in straight sets.
