YOUNGSVILLE, La. – Spartans drop opening two matchups of Sugar Beach Bash.
Following a long travel day on Thursday, UT battled Alabama-Birmingham in an early Friday morning matchup.
Madison Brunick and
Keely Hamilton notched yet another win in the 4's pairing, improving their record to 11-4. However, the Blazers showed they had come to play sealing a three set win in the 5's and a two set sweep in the threes to put them in the driver seat.
Teona Treskounov and
Angel Williams salvaged another win for the Spartans in a three set battle, but Tampa ultimately fell in the 1's, and dropped their first duel of the weekend.
The Spartans looked to bounce back from their morning loss in an afternoon matchup with Boise State that saw wild weather and wild volleyball. Freshman,
Anna Bayes and sophomore
Meghan Schreck made their second appearance in the 5's for Tampa and pushed the Bronco's to extra points in a third set. Despite their efforts, the young pairing was outlasted at 19-17, seeing Boise State to their first point in the duel. On schedule,
Hamilton and
Brunick sealed a win for the Spartans in the 4's, leaving the top three pairs in a best two of three battle.
Hailey Wolfe and
Nevaeh Wolfe battled hard in the 3's and pushed both of the first two sets into extra points but were edged out by the Broncos on both occasions. Boise State went on the clinch the 1's and 2's and seal a 4-1 duel victory, shutting out the Spartans on day 1.
