The #2 Spartans Too Hot to Handle for Division I Harvard
TAMPA, Fla. - The University of Tampa (26-6) looked impressive in an 11-0 shutout of Harvard (2-5). The victory was the first shutout of the season for the defending national champions.
Jose Jimenez's double to the left center gap, in the first, was deep enough to score Ryan Kennedy from first base, who earlier reached with a base on balls.
Craig Corroado doubled the Spartan lead with a fly out to left field that was deep enough for Kennedy to score from third, his second run of the game as Tampa led 2-0 after three innings.
Corrado manufactured a run on his own in the bottom of the sixth. He was able to bunt for a base hit but advanced to second on a throwing error by the pitcher. He was running on the next pitch, but a throwing error on the catcher allowed him to score. Tampa opened up the scoring later in the inning, as Nolan Brannon, Mena and Junior Mejia also came around to score on RBI off the bats of Troy Ferguson and Kennedy, extending the Spartans lead to 7-0.
Tampa added four more runs in the seventh to push their lead to 11-0.
Anthony Perez tossed six innings of two hit ball without surrendering a run. With the victory he moves to 4-0 on the season.
The Spartans play host to SSC foe Eckerd this Friday at the University of Tampa Baseball Stadium.
