Tampa Pulls Away Late to Earn Victory Over Eckerd
TAMPA, Fla. - The University of Tampa (27-6, 5-2) fell behind early but came out on top when all was said and done in the 11-7 victory over SSC opponent Eckerd College (13-14, 3-7)
The Tritons tagged Tampa for three first innings runs on four hits. Jeff Bromley's single to left center drove in two of the three Eckerd runs.
Ryan Kennedy brought the Spartans within a run in the bottom half of the inning with his 10th homerun of the season, as he drove in Troy Ferguson with the blast to right field.
Chris Rosenbaum led of the second inning with a double and crossed the plate on Junior Mejia's triple. T. Ferguson picked up his second hit in as many innings and gave Tampa the lead at 4-3.
Eckerd tied things up in the third as Wes Williams drove in Grant Massie with a single through the right side.
Rosenbaum doubled for the second time of the game, this time driving in Paul Cruz, who scored from first base. Tampa regained the lead at 5-4 heading into the fourth.
Paul Cruz's sacrifice fly in the fourth plated Kennedy and pushed the Spartans lead to two.
A costly Tampa error led to an unearned run for Eckerd in the fifth as the Tritons pulled within a run to keep the Spartans in reach at 6-5.
Eckerd took their second lead of the ballgame with two more runs in the seventh, both once again unearned as Tampa committed their third error of the evening.
Rosenbaum led off the seventh with yet another double and later scored on T. Ferguson's RBI single, tying the game at seven.
A perfectly executed suicide squeeze from Cruz scored the go ahead run for the Spartans as Craig Corrado scored. Later in the inning Rosenbaum roped his fourth double of the game driving in Mena. Tampa added two more runs taking a 11-7 lead.
Jonathan Holt (1-1) notched his first win as a Spartan and Tim Karkatselos took the loss for the Tritons.
The same two teams return to action tomorrow for a double header at 1:00 pm at the University of Tampa Baseball Stadium.
