Tampa Tallies Win Behind Stellar Pitching Performance
Tampa, Fla. - Kevin Ferguson pitched the Spartans to a 6-0 win over the Lions of Saint Leo on Friday. Tampa improves to 37-9 on the season with a conference best 15-4 mark with the victory.
The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the fifth when the Spartans capitalized on a one out double into the right center field gap by Nolan Brannon, getting back-to-back RBI singles from Junior Mejia and Paul Cruz to score the game's first runs to put Tampa up 2-0. Tampa would score once more in the inning to take a 3-0 lead heading into frame number six.
The Spartans struck again in the very next inning by way of the long ball, courtesy of a two run shot to center field by Roberto Mena to extend the lead to 5-0.
Mena added to his already impressive night with one out in the eighth inning, crushing his second home run of the game, this one a solo shot on a line to left center field to further extend the Tampa lead to 6-0.
Kevin Ferguson turned in a dominating performance on the mound for the Spartans, scattering five hits over right shutout innings while striking out eight Lions. Roberto Mena supplied the only offense the Spartans would need, smashing two home runs on his way to a 2 for 4 night, driving in three runs.
The Spartans are back in action tomorrow as they conclude a weekend series with Saint Leo in a doubleheader starting at 1:00 pm.
