Tampa Sweeps Conference Awards
ORLANDO, Fla. - The third-ranked university of Tampa baseball team took both Sunshine state Conference weekly awards as Roberto Mena was named SSC Player of the Week and Kevin Ferguson was SSC Pitcher of the Week. Both individuals won the award for the first time this season as UT has now accumulated eight SSC awards.
Mena, a shortstop from Rio Grande, P.R., enjoyed a huge weekend as the third-ranked Spartans swept a conference series from Saint Leo. Mena, who slugged a pair of home runs in each of the first two games of the series, posted a .700 (7-for-10) batting average with two doubles, one triple, four home runs, 10 RBI and six runs scored in the three-game set. He slugged an impressive 2.300 and was flawless in 17 chances in the field.
Ferguson, UT's ace from Port St. Lucie, Fla., tossed eight shutout innings as the Spartans claimed a 6-0 victory in the opening game of a three-game series with Saint Leo. Ferguson (9-2) scattered five hits, struck out eight and did not walk a batter. He has allowed just three runs over his past 44 innings of work.
