MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. - The top-ranked University of Tampa baseball team (2-0) began its title defense with a doubleheader sweep against #13 Georgia College & State University (0-2). Tampa won the first game 6-5 in 11 innings, and took the second game by a score of 15-3.
Tampa opened the scoring in the third inning of the first game when junior transfer Casey Albanese came across the plate after a Bobcat error. Jesus Barroso followed with an RBI double, and Paul Cruz drove him in with an RBI single to put the Spartans up 3-0.
With the score 4-1 in favor of Tampa, GCSU scored two runs in the sixth and one in the eighth to tie the game and force extra innings. The two teams traded runs in the 10th to push the game into the 11th inning when Junior Mejia drove in the winning run with a sacrifice fly that scored Rob Kane to give the Spartans a 6-5 victory to open the season.
The Spartans left little doubt to the outcome of the second game, scoring eight runs in the first three innings to take an 8-2 lead against the Bobcats. Jose Jimenez drove in the game's first run in the person of Cruz, hitting a ball into the right field gap in the first inning.
Tampa crossed the plate six times in the second inning courtesy of RBI base knocks from Garrett Maines, Ryan Williams, Nolan Brannon, and Jimenez. Steven Broschofsky, Jared Simon, and Williams added solo home runs throughout the game, propelling the Spartans to a 15-3 win.
Scott Chapman pitched five and two-thirds innings of relief to pick up his the win in the first game. Anthony Perez recorded the last out of the game to earn the save. Tyler Nessmith pitched two scoreless innings in the second game to pick up the win in relief of John Wiedenbauer, who gave up three runs and struck out five in four innings.
Brannon, Williams, and Barroso led the Spartans with four hits each on the day, as eight players drove in two runs.
The top-ranked Spartans return to the field on Tuesday in their home opener against Flagler. First pitch is scheduled for 7 pm at the University of Tampa baseball field.
